Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer)
This bird is a very common throughout India and seen in a variety places with crops or other fields and shrubs nearby. Almost always heard when one walks past them in our IIT, these birds are vocalists throughout the year. Though the name has bulbul (means a Nightingale in many local languages) in it, we should mistake it for a Nightingale (a song bird).
1. Small black crest
2. Black head or nearly black-brownish color
3. Brown and light brown body with somewhat scaly patterns
4. Black beak, eyes and tail
5. A small typical bulbul vent in red color, thus giving its name.
Here are some pictures to help you identify them when you see one 🙂
